On the Trail of Bigfoot: Last Frontier

On the Trail of Bigfoot: Last Frontier… another reminder of just how big and empty parts of the U.S. are.

This is another documentary by the Small Town Monsters crew. I’ve been personally backing their Kickstarter projects for a few years now. Each one of those projects leads to the production of a handful of documentaries on strange and unusual things.

This is one in their ongoing series about bigfoot.

The “Last Frontier” here is Alaska, another of those big, empty wilderness areas of the U.S. Like other areas of big woods and mountains, there are generations worth of tales of bigfoot (and bigfoot-like creatures).

As is normally the case in Small Town Monsters productions, a large hunk of this documentary is talking to regular people–ones who aren’t bigfoot “hunter” or anything like that–who’ve had personal encounters with, well, bigfoot.

It’s obvious from the way these people tell their stories that they did encounter something beyond their normal experience. More importantly, most of them were more than a little familiar with the typical critters of the region… so there’s no way they’d be mistaking bears for bigfoot.

Some of them aren’t at all thrilled with repeating their stories. Even years later, that fear they felt wells up readily… mixed, at times, with the embarrassment “sounding crazy” (we really do need to stop pushing the idea that anyone who experiences something odd isn’t right in the head).

Then there are the interviews with the local experts. The people who are bigfoot hunters and have put in many, many hours in the wilderness actively looking for these creatures. Some of them have tales of their own experiences, but, mostly, they have collections of other people’s stories and a lot of theories.

How is it possible that they still haven’t found definitive proof of bigfoot?

Well, much to the frustration of everyone, there’s a whole lot of ground to cover and a lot of it is inhospitable for a lot of the year. Plus, like most wild animals (and perhaps more like people who don’t want to be found than we’d be comfortable with considering), these creatures actively avoid humans most of the time.

And those times they’re not actively avoiding humans, they’re actively trying to make the humans go away. Which all the smart humans seem to be more than happy to do.

There’s a second disc in with this one, with another 2+ hours of interviews and things. I haven’t dug into that yet, but it’s bound to be just as fascinating.

Well, if you’re interested in cryptids like bigfoot, at least.
